Obituary

Jean Lovelace Stinchcombe, of S. Burlington, VT, and previously Jamesville and DeWitt, NY, passed away on January 29, 2022, due to complications from a stroke she suffered last fall and a recent COVID-19 infection. She was 82 years old, and was predeceased by her husband, William Stinchcombe. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Richard Lovelace and Marina Romanova, of Ithaca, NY; her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Stinchcombe and Kristi Dry, of Hillsborough, NC; daughter Marjorie Stinchcombe of S. Burlington, VT; and son John Stinchcombe, and his partner Danica Oldford, of Toronto, ON, Canada. She grew up in St. Louis, MO, and was a graduate of John Burroughs High School, Swarthmore College, and obtained her PhD in political science from the University of Michigan in 1966. She and her husband Bill spent much of their adult lives, and raised their children, in DeWitt, NY. She taught classes part-time at the Syracuse University school of continuing education, wrote reports for the Thursday Morning Roundtable, and served as Trustee at Manlius Pebble Hill School. She was active in school politics, fought plans to close local elementary schools, and then wrote a book about it, Response to Declining Enrollment: School Closing in Suburbia, while minding three children at home. She supported her children at every stage in their lives, always full of interest and hope for their happiness. Jean was a voracious reader, loved news and politics, thrived on conversation, and was a writer at heart. She had a gift of making and keeping friends, and was an active and engaged questioner in any conversation. She loved lunch out, coffee, her iPhone, amazon.com, and email. She especially loved picnics with friends and family, hot dogs and corn on the cob, and was a true animal lover her entire life. After Bill died, Jean moved to Vermont where she made many new friends, and spent weekends exploring Vermont and its lovely scenery with her daughter and grandson Charlie. She particularly loved going to Kingsland Bay State Park in the summer. She cherished her role as a grandmother to Bradley, Finley Anne, Charlie, Jack, and Piper Stinchcombe, and step-grandmother to Madeline Barnes. A celebration of life is planned for later this year, when the weather and pandemic safely allow it. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Shelburne Farms or Vermont Parks Forever.
