Husband, Father, Uncle, and Grandpa passed peacefully at the McClure Miller Respite House on February 26th 2021 surrounded by his family. He has been reunited with his wife Dawna, the love of his life, who passed just 10 months ago.
John was born in Colchester, VT at Fanny Allen hospital on May 3rd 1941, the son of Artie J. McClellan and Doris G. McClellan (Bolio). John grew up in Underhill being raised on the McClellan Farm off of English Settlement road. John graduated Jericho High School, VT class of 1959. After graduating John worked for E.W. Bailey Co. working in the mill mixing grain and as a truck driver delivering grain and feed to many local farms. He worked for E.W. Bailey until 1974 when it was bought by Beacon Feeds, then bought by Cargill in 1985. He continued working there until the fire in 1988. The next chapter of Johns working career took him back home to the town of Underhill where he worked for the town plowing roads in the winter time and working on them in the summer. John also worked for the town of Shelburne. After this John semi retired but worked part time for Fisher Auto Parts for 10 plus years delivering parts to many local garages. John fully retired from this job in 2009.
John was married to his wife Dawna on September 4th 1965 at Holy Family church in Essex Junction. Their daughter Amy was born the following August and their son John was born 7 years later to round out their family. John and Dawna lived for a brief time in St. George VT before finally settling down in Essex Junction, VT where he and his wife spent the rest of their days together.
John was a very hard working and loving husband and father. Just like his wife Dawna, John enjoyed spending time at home with family and the many special occasions and family barbecues where everyone would gather at the house. If it was a Saturday you could often find John going for a ride up to Underhill where he had grown up. Sundays were not much different other than his wife would join him for the ride. One of the things John truly enjoyed was deer season. It was the one time of year that he and his brothers and nephews would gather up by the old farm in Underhill to try and land the big buck. He had many successful seasons in his younger days but as the years passed on it became less frequent. The thing he enjoyed the most was being with his brothers, son and nephews, just telling and listening to the stories of the past seasons. These stories were most likely shared every season but they always made him laugh and smile. John was very close with his siblings and spent many years gardening in Underhill and eventually smaller gardens in Essex Jct. John also enjoyed years of snowmobiling with his brother Doug and family.
Upon retiring John would help out with picking up his granddaughters after school with his wife and helping out with watching them when they were younger. He was always willing to help out with that or any other thing we asked him. John was a big Red Sox fan and would rarely miss a game during the summer months. This made for some good zingers with his brother, daughter, son in law and nephews that are Yankee fans.
John is survived by his daughter Amy Blanchard and husband Damon of Georgia, VT, son John McClellan and wife Meredith of Essex, VT, granddaughters Cameron and Caitlin McClellan of Essex, VT, sister Margaret Allen of Williston, brother Peter of Underhill, VT, sister in law Corinne Candy Fournier and husband Kenneth of St. Albans, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Artie & Doris, wife Dawna, brothers Douglas and wife Estella McClellan, Robert Skeezix and wife Arlene McClellan, sister in law Yvonne McClellan, brother in law Donald Allen Sr. and niece Betty McClellan.
John received excellent care in his final days and the family is grateful for the outstanding care he received from the Respite House in Colchester. The care they gave to him was truly amazing, thank you so much!
A graveside service at Underhill Flats Cemetery and celebration of Johns life will be held at a later date with a formal notice to follow. In memory, contributions may be made in his name to the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, VT
