Ralph Darnell Norman, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, proud Navy veteran, talented tinkerer, community volunteer and friend to many, passed away on September 26, 2026. He was 88 years old.
Ralph was born Ralph Talvin Darnell on June 30, 1938, in Williamsburg, Virginia, to David Oscar Darnell and Mary Nixon Darnell. His father died in December 1938, and following World War II, the family moved to York, Nebraska, with his stepfather, J.D. Norman. Ralph graduated from York High School (NE) in 1957 and entered the United States Navy that same year.
The Navy became an important part of Ralph's life and took a young man from Nebraska on an extraordinary journey. Following boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, he served at NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida, and attended Fleet Sonar School in Key West. He later served with Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 3 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia, where he qualified as an air crewman, and with the Navy's 1st Helicopter Squadron in Catania, Sicily.
In 1962, Ralph volunteered for submarine duty and attended Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, the following year. His submarine career included service aboard the USS Sarda, USS Piper, USS Cobbler, USS Thomas A. Edison and USS Sam Rayburn, along with assignments to Submarine Squadron TWO, Fleet Sonar School and Mobile Technical Unit Four.
On October 2, 1965, Ralph married Annette Marie Pucci in Bradford, Rhode Island. In 1966, their first son was born, David Darnell, followed by sons Kevin Peter in 1968 and Jeremy Ralph in 1970. During their early years of marriage, the Norman family lived in Westerly, Rhode Island and Key West, Florida, ultimately settling in Ledyard, Connecticut, where they would live until 2025. Ralph and Annette celebrated 61 years of marriage in 2026.
Over the course of his career, Ralph rose to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9) and served as Chief of the Boat, accomplishments that reflected the experience and responsibility he attained during his years in the submarine service. He retired from the Navy in August 1979 after 22 years of service.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Ralph put his considerable technical knowledge and experience to work as a Field Services Engineer specializing in submarine sonar systems. He worked for several defense contractors in Connecticut and Rhode Island, including A&T Technical Services, TRACOR, DDL Omni Engineering, McLaughlin Research Corporation, Marconi and BAE North America, fully retiring in December 2003.
But Ralph's life was about much more than his career. He was devoted to his family and he made the most of his spare time. He was an expert tinkerer who loved working on cars, electronics, and home renovations. Whether something needed fixing, improving or simply figuring out, Ralph was ready to take it on.
Ralph was also an avid sports fan who followed the New England Patriots, UConn Men’s and Women’s basketball and Connecticut Sun basketball. He loved to barbecue (his specialty was ribs and chicken) and he enjoyed working in his garden and on yard projects.
Anyone who spent much time with Ralph also quickly discovered his good-natured sense of humor. He had a knack for playful teasing and enjoyed the back-and-forth that came from giving family, friends and new acquaintances a little good-natured ribbing. It was simply part of Ralph's personality and one of the ways he connected with people.
Service to others continued long after Ralph took off his Navy uniform. He volunteered at local food pantries and high school football concession stands, sponsored and hosted U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets, volunteered as an election poll worker, served as a Scout Master for the local Boy Scouts of America troop, and assisted in raising funds for the local Catholic church (Our Lady of Lourdes, Gales Ferry, CT) that he and Annette faithfully attended.
Ralph is survived by his wife Annette; son David (Jane) of North Andover, Massachusetts; son Kevin (Geri) of Lee's Summit, Missouri; son Jeremy (Julie), of Hinesburg, Vermont; grandchildren Rylee, Shelby, Trevor, Brodie, and Chase; sister Emily of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother James (Lucille) of Rockland, MA; and a cherished extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, David Oscar Darnell, and his mother, Mary Nixon Darnell and stepfather, J.D. Norman.
The family will hold a celebration of life at a future date, but in the meantime, we would love to hear stories, favorite memories or connections you had of Ralph. Please post them here: Obituaries in South Burlington, VT | Champlain Cremation
