Obituary

Steven Bruce Charbonneau, 66, known lovingly to family and friends as "Steve" or "Charby," passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Monday, July 20, 2026, at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, following a courageous battle with cancer. His passing came just two years after he received a liver transplant in April 2024, the hard-won result of another long and determined battle with liver disease. Through every challenge, Steve never lost his sense of humor, his hope, or his resolve.

Born on July 27, 1959, Steve grew up in Burlington's South End, one of six children, and attended Burlington High School. He loved and appreciated Vermont deeply and made his life in Chittenden County, where he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son.

A driven and diligent worker, Steve built his career with a number of Vermont-based businesses, spending his final 15-plus years at the Blodgett Oven Company in Essex Junction.

Steve was an avid sports fan who followed nearly every professional sport, but baseball held his heart above all. He and his son, Steve, shared a lifelong love of the New York Yankees and watched countless games together over the years.

He was also an enthusiastic foodie who delighted in food in all its forms. For Steve, a good meal was never just a meal — it was a bridge, a way to connect with others and bring the people he loved together.

Steve was endlessly proud of his daughter, Kaitlin, for building a life and family of her own in Dallas, Texas, and he loved his only grandchild, Kayleigh, beyond words.

Thoughtful, kind, and gentle, Steve will be remembered for his unwavering empathy, his ever-present sense of humor, his gift for showing up whenever he was needed, and the deep and abiding love he held for his family.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Bob" Charbonneau, and his brother, Alan Charbonneau. He is survived by his mother, Marion Charbonneau, 95; his beloved wife of 43 years, Susan "Susie" Charbonneau; his son, Steven A. Charbonneau; his daughter, Kaitlin A. Phillips, and her husband, Brandon S. Phillips; his granddaughter, Kayleigh S. Phillips; his brothers, Michael, Peter, and Gary Charbonneau; and his sister, Paula Charbonneau.

The family wishes to extend their deep thanks and gratitude to all of the healthcare workers who cared for Steve during his final years, with special appreciation for the staff at the McClure Miller Respite House, who made his final days as comfortable and dignified as possible.

Per Steve's wishes, no formal funeral is planned at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Steve's memory to the Humane Society of Chittenden County.
